New hires and their first focus

Whenever I hire people I give them three things to work on as they start:

1. Something they have done before, that they can do without much thought
2. Something on the company to-do list that is urgent to get done
3. Something that is critical for the company, and which is beyond the immediate experience of the person hired.

Doing this gets people integrated into the business quickly, gives them a prompt feeling of success, and gives them an opportunity to see how they can accomplish seemingly impossible tasks in our environment.
