Nurturing Talent: Best Practices for Attracting, Retaining, and Developing Top Employees

Attracting good people is the easy part compared to what comes after. Most talent loss isn't about compensation, it's about people who joined for growth and stopped seeing any.

Development doesn't require a formal program at an early-stage company. It requires you noticing what someone's actually good at, giving them something slightly beyond their current scope, and being honest with them about where they stand. Silence about someone's trajectory reads as "you're not on my radar," even when that's not what you meant.

Retention follows the same logic. People rarely leave a company they respect over one bad week. They leave after a slow accumulation of feeling unseen, undeveloped, or stuck in a role that stopped stretching them a year ago.

The best retention strategy isn't a benefits package. It's paying enough attention to notice when someone's growth has quietly stalled, before they've already decided to leave.

Leadership Development is where founders build this kind of attention into how they actually run their teams.
