You will leave people behind and that is okay.

You will leave people behind

In 2019 I got sick. Within weeks I learned who in my professional life saw me as a person and who only saw my pace, my network, and my output.

Not many stayed. I am not angry about it. I am clear.

I had thought I had close relationships. What I had were useful ones. When I was no longer the CEO they knew, they did not know how to meet me. So they drifted.

Hard seasons do that. You become someone slightly different. Some people cannot relate to the new you. Some do not want to try. That is okay.

Most work ties are built on benefit. Remove the benefit and many fade. That is not cynicism. That is how most systems work.

So I use a simple test now.

Who checks in when I am quiet.
Who shows up when there is nothing in it for them.
Who sees me beyond a title.

That is my circle. Everyone else is a pleasant acquaintance.

If you are a founder, this shift can feel jarring because your role and your identity often blur. When the role moves, the room changes. Treat that as information. Choose the rooms that match who you are now.

I remind myself of one thing when old contacts fall away. My life is not a museum. New chapters need new furniture. The people meant for this chapter will find their seats. The rest already had theirs.
