What Is Energy Architecture Design?

Energy Architecture Design is the first practice of the Whole Human Framework's Personal Sustainability quadrant. It means understanding when you have capacity for what kinds of work, and building your days, weeks, and years around that reality instead of against it. Same hours, different placement, very different output.

What does it look like in practice?

One of my clients, a founder in Munich I call Klaus in the book, discovered he was spending his sharpest morning hours on reactive email and his depleted evening hours on strategy. He inverted the pattern: mornings protected for strategic thinking, email pushed to afternoons. He did not work different hours. He worked differently inside them, and the quality of his decisions changed within weeks.

Why does placement matter more than volume?

Because decision quality follows energy, not effort. During my own recovery in 2020 I cut from 70 hours a week to 45 and had more energy, not less. I had been running a crisis-mode system as if it were a sustainable operating model, making every decision without rest. The lesson was not to work less. It was to stop spending premium capacity on junk tasks.

How do you design your own energy architecture?

Three steps. First, track for one week when you feel sharp and when you feel dull. No judgment, just data. Second, list your three highest-value activities, the ones only you can do. Third, move those activities into your sharp windows and defend them like board meetings. Everything else fits around them.

Energy Architecture Design is one of twelve practices in the Whole Human Framework. The full system, including how it connects to recovery and team design, is in The Whole Human Leader (Wiley, 2026). If your calendar currently runs you instead of the reverse, that is also exactly what we fix in the first weeks of coaching.
