Life coach vs leadership coach: what is the difference?
A life coach works on your life as a whole: health, relationships, direction, habits. A leadership coach works on how you lead: decisions, teams, influence, the specific problems of holding responsibility for other people. The subject matter differs, the training often differs, and for a founder the distinction decides whether the sessions are useful.
The categories overlap more than either camp admits. Here is where the line actually falls.
What each one is for
Life coaching is broad by design. Someone wants to change direction, build different habits, sort out how they spend their time, or work out what they want next. There is no assumption of a workplace and no assumption you manage anyone.
Leadership coaching assumes responsibility for others. The material is the specific difficulty of leading: making decisions with incomplete information, being the person people manage upward to, holding standards, having conversations nobody wants to have.
The clean version of the distinction: a life coach helps you decide what you want. A leadership coach helps you handle what you have taken on.
Why the overlap is real
Anyone who claims these are cleanly separate has not done much of either.
A founder who cannot delegate is rarely facing a technique problem. It usually connects to something about being needed. A CEO avoiding a firing conversation for four months is not short of management theory. Someone whose calendar has not matched their priorities since March has a decision problem wearing a scheduling costume.
Leadership problems run into personal ones almost immediately, which is why the best leadership coaches are comfortable there and do not pretend the two are separate. The Whole Human Framework is how I hold both without collapsing one into the other.
The honest difference is direction of travel. A leadership coach starts with the role and follows it into the person when the role requires it. A life coach starts with the person and may never go near the specifics of your job.
For a founder that direction matters. Your company is not a context for your personal development. It is the thing with payroll attached.
Where the market gets murky
Neither term is protected. Anyone can use either, and plenty use both on the same page.
Life coaching has a much lower barrier and a wider quality range. Some practitioners are excellent. Others completed a short online course and built a website last month, and both will describe themselves in similar language.
Leadership coaching has a somewhat higher floor, because clients are usually companies with procurement standards. It is not a guarantee. A leadership coach with no operating history can still struggle to keep up with what you are describing.
My view is that lived experience beats credentials for this audience, and I will push back on anyone treating a certificate as the bar. That said, I have met certified coaches with no founder background who are better at this than plenty of ex-CEOs. The scars matter. They are not the only thing that matters.
Which one a founder should hire
For most founders and CEOs the answer is leadership coaching, or its narrower cousin, founder coaching. Three reasons.
Comprehension. You should not need to explain what a down round is, or why a co-founder split differs from a normal falling out. Someone without that background spends your sessions catching up.
The work is role-shaped. Your problems arrive attached to a company. Decisions, people, standards, board. A coach whose material is habits and direction will handle the edges of that and miss the middle.
Consequence. Leadership work carries other people's income. That changes how seriously a coach needs to treat a decision, and someone used to individual goal-setting may not weigh it properly.
There is a real exception. If your actual question is "do I want to keep doing this at all," that is closer to life coaching territory, and a good leadership coach should be willing to go there rather than steering you back to the org chart.
What about therapy
Worth naming because founders sometimes hire a coach when they need something else.
There is genuine overlap and pretending otherwise is dishonest. The working difference is that a therapist spends more time on where something came from, and a coach spends more time on what you are going to do about it on Thursday. Therapy also has regulated training, which coaching does not.
If sleep has gone, if the low periods last weeks rather than days, or if the same thing keeps happening across every company you have run, that is therapy's territory and no amount of leadership coaching will substitute. A good coach says this out loud and helps you find someone rather than keeping the fee.
How to tell which one you are actually buying
Ask two questions in the first conversation.
"Who are your current clients?" If the answer is a mix of people with no leadership responsibility, you are talking to a life coach whatever the website says. Fine, if that is what you want.
"Describe a client you failed." Works regardless of category, and sits alongside the other tests in what makes a good CEO coach. Anyone serious has one, and the shape of the failure tells you the territory they actually operate in.
Common questions
Can one person do both?
Some can, and will tell you which mode they are in. Be careful with anyone who blurs it deliberately, because you cannot weigh advice properly when you do not know what kind you are getting.
Is executive coaching the same as leadership coaching?
Close to the same craft. Executive coaching usually implies a corporate setting and company funding, which puts a quiet ceiling on what can be discussed.
Which costs more?
Leadership and executive coaching generally sit higher, partly because companies pay. Price sorts poorly for quality in both categories.
What if I want to work on both work and life?
Say so at the start and pick someone who will not flinch. For founders the two are one system, which is why the better founder coaches work across both rather than staying on the safe side of a line.
The short version
Life coaching starts with the person, leadership coaching starts with the role. For a founder the role is where the payroll is, so start there, and hire someone unafraid to follow it into the personal when the situation demands it.
