How Do You Recover From Founder Burnout?
Recovery from burnout follows predictable patterns, just as the decline does. The Recovery Roadmap from my book treats it as four interconnected phases of active rebuilding, not just rest. Phase one is stabilization: six weeks where the only goal is teaching your nervous system to be steady again.
What does stabilization look like?
When I collapsed in February 2020, my psychologist gave me four instructions, written in Danish and taped to my wall: sleep, eat, spend time with my son, exercise. Nothing else. That was the entire program for weeks, and it was harder than any job I have had. Your nervous system has been in chronic activation mode. Before you can build anything new, you need safety and predictability. Productivity is not the priority. Stability is.
Why is rest alone not enough?
Because rest treats the symptom. If you rest for three months and return to the same system, the same calendar, the same beliefs about what your worth depends on, the system produces the same result. The roadmap's later phases are about rebuilding differently: redesigning your energy architecture, repairing the relationships that thinned out, and rebuilding your work so it runs without consuming you. Research on structured recovery backs this up: leaders who use systematic approaches recover markedly faster than those who rely on rest alone.
How long does recovery take?
Honest answer: longer than you want and shorter than you fear. Stabilization takes about six weeks. Real rebuilding takes months. But most founders I coach are functional and improving well before they are fully recovered, and many end up leading better than before the collapse, because they rebuilt on a different foundation.
The full Recovery Roadmap, all four phases with tools, is in The Whole Human Leader (Wiley, 2026).
