Feels like a prison (but with titles and money)

In 2004 a mentor I had while working for a bank in New York and I was talking about my dissatisfaction with my job. I had taken the job for the prestige and the money and I was miserable.

He asked me how it made me feel and I said "It feels like I am in prison, locked up all day and night, no freedom of movement, no joy, life being sucked out of me"

He said: "Well, you are. Let go of the notion that prestige and money will make you happy, and break out"

Two weeks later I quit and started my first company.

I've never focused on titles or money since, one of the most important lessons of my career.
