Two traps you need to avoid
Two traps you need to avoid:
Caring what they think.
Thinking that they care.
I've coached people at every level through this exact trap.
From interns to CEOs.
Here's what I've learned:
It doesn't matter where you are in the organization.
The voices are always there.
"What will my boss/board think?"
"My coworkers are judging every decision."
"Everyone's waiting for me to mess up."
Sound familiar?
Think of it this way:
- Your need for approval is killing your potential.
- The best decisions often look wrong to everyone else first.
- Other people's opinions change daily. Your vision shouldn't.
- Every breakthrough requires disappointing someone.
The people who win do this:
They stop managing perceptions.
They start making decisions.
When that voice asks, "What will they think?"
They ask back, "What do I know is right?"
The goal isn't to be liked all the time.
The goal is to lead your own life despite the noise.
Your fear of judgment isn't protecting you.
It's limiting you.
What decision would you make today if you stopped caring so much about what others thought?
